Frequently Asked Questions

Where do my books go?

We sort the books, sell some to support our work and donate the rest to local organizations.

Where does Omaha Book Recovery operate?

We will pick up books anywhere in Douglas or Sarpy counties and Council Bluffs. We can travel to Lincoln, Fremont, Blair and other nearby areas for larger pickups (More than 150 books).

Is Omaha Book Recovery a non-profit?

Omaha Book Recovery is a free service that finds new homes for used books, and we facilitate donations to non-profits. In fact, most of the books that we recover are donated to Omaha-area charities.

Is there a minimum amount of books that you’ll pick up?

To keep our small operation as efficient as possible, we prefer a minimum of 50 books to schedule a pickup. We particularly feel our service adds the most value when multiple boxes of books are involved, saving you the heavy lifting. And we are always happy to help pack up books from a larger collection.

What condition should my books be in?

Books should be in good condition, from a clean, smoke-free environment. We are unable to take books that are dirty, musty, water damaged or falling apart. They should also be of current interest.

What kind of books do you pick up?

We are happy to haul away most genres of books, including:

  • Non-fiction (history, biography, arts, nature, sports, etc.)

  • Religious books

  • Fiction

  • Children’s books

  • Cook books

  • We’ll also accept used CDs, DVDs and video games

What don’t you pick up?

  • Textbooks that are more than 5 years old

  • Discarded library books

  • Community/church cookbooks

  • Yearbooks

  • Magazines (put them in your curbside recycling)

  • Most encyclopedias (feel free to inquire)

  • Old books that are no longer of interest to current readers—please be considerate of our time and space resources

  • Anything that is obviously trash

Do my books need to be boxed up?

If you prefer, we are happy to pack up your unwanted books. If they’re already packed up, we can carry the boxes from anywhere in your house or pick them up from your porch, garage or driveway.

I’m not in the area. How can I find someone local to help with my books?

For larger collections within a few hours of Omaha, we are often happy to make a special trip. Don’t hesitate to reach out. Otherwise, check out the Book Donation Map of America

Where do you donate books to?
